Do you lie awake at night unable to sleep, and becoming more anxious as the hours pass? If so, you’re not alone. Insomnia affects approximately 60 million people in the United States alone, and there is no single cause for the sleep disorder. But what is known is that a number of culprits may be to blame including anxiety, pain or sleep disorders.

Many of those who suffer turn to CBD oil for help. CBD, or cannabidiol, is a plant compound that is derived from cannabis. It does not, however, induce the psychoactive effects of THC, which is the compound responsible for creating the high experienced by cannabis users. CBD for sleep is becoming more popular as research is proving that it does work and without the side effects of common sleep medications.

Anxiety is one of the most commonly reported reasons behind the inability to sleep. Fortunately, CBD is shown to ease anxiety, while at least one report found that CBD may be an effective tool for lessening anxiety in clinical trials. While the authors suggest that more controlled trials are needed, current understanding shows CBD may interact with existing neurological pathways and help ease anxiety-related issues.

One case study looked at the effectiveness of CBD for insomnia due to anxiety from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The study concluded that CBD oil is effective for reducing insomnia and anxiety stemming from PTSD. It seems to work as it blocks anxiety-induced rapid eye movement, which can interfere with sleep and cause nightmares for some.

Pain is also a major cause of insomnia and lack of sleep, but CBD seems to ease pain, which should allow for greater comfort and better sleep. Cannabidiol (CBD) is considered an anti-inflammatory analgesic that reduces inflammation and acts as a pain reliever. In fact, one medication using CBD was approved in Canada for the treatment of neuropathic pain due to multiple sclerosis and cancer pain. It was proven to be well tolerated and shows promise as a new tool for pain management.

Those who suffer from neuropathy find it difficult to sleep soundly through the night. But CBD was studied for the management of pain due to neuropathy from injury, diabetes, multiple sclerosis and chemotherapy. A review of the clinical studies found that, overall, cannabinoid treatment provided benefits for patients who suffer from neuropathic pain.

RBD is short for Rapid Eye Movement Sleep Behavior Disorder, or REM Sleep Behavior Disorder. It is characterized by abnormal behavior during the REM sleep phase and results in overly vivid dreaming and frequent nightmares. Because the patient lacks atonia (muscle paralysis that occurs during sleep), limb twitches and violent movements may occur, interfering with sleep and sometimes causing harm. Fortunately, research in this area using CBD has begun. So far, one review showed that preliminary research indicates CBD oil may be a valid treatment for REM sleep disorders.

Another case report from the Journal of Clinical Pharmacy and Therapeutics also showed promise using CBD for the treatment of RBD. In this report, patients treated with CBD had a significant reduction in RBD-related events, and it did so without side effects.

If you are considering using CBD oil for sleep, always consult with your doctor first if you are currently taking medication, to check there are no interactions. And always choose to buy from a reputable company and follow the product dosage guidelines.

CBD for sleep shows promise as research slowly uncovers its therapeutic value. While the studies are young, these along with anecdotal evidence gives a strong argument for the use of CBD oil for better sleep.
