Can CBD Oil Cure My Condition?

If you’re suffering from a chronic health condition that isn’t responding to conventional medicine, you may have begun seeking out alternative remedies. Perhaps you’ve read about CBD oil and heard users hailing it as a medical breakthrough that has “cured” their illness? This would understandably give you hope of a cure for your own condition.

But current UK law relating to the sale, claims, and use of CBD oil products is complicated, to say the least. You will probably have seen a number of CBD food supplements for sale in health shops and online, but may be unaware that they are unregulated. In other words, there is no authoritative agency assessing these supplement products to ensure they are safe to use and compliant with this country’s laws.

That’s not to say that CBD oil goes completely unchecked – but you’re no doubt wondering how to buy CBD oil if regulation is such a grey area. Of course, there are undoubtedly some rogue companies that are focused more on making money than on ensuring your health and safety. But many brands are actually pressing for high standards and regulations as this will encourage consumers to trust their products.

This is another grey area! Here in the UK, we have the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). This is a government body that does regulate some CBD products – but only the ones that are classed as medications, not dietary supplements.

The MHRA is tasked with the responsibility of ensuring all UK medicines comply with UK laws. They are a large organisation that regularly conducts reviews into medications and updates their guidelines accordingly to ensure they are safe.

Over the past few years, the CBD oil market has grown, and some people have turned to cannabidiol to treat serious health conditions such as epilepsy – even in children. As such, in 2016, the MHRA published a statement in response to this growing use of CBD:

“We have come to the opinion that products containing cannabidiol (CBD) used for medical purposes are a medicine. Medicinal products must have a product licence (marketing authorisation) before they can be legally sold, supplied or advertised in the UK, unless exempt. Licensed medicinal products have to meet safety, quality and efficacy standards to protect public health.”

There are no black and white answers to these questions. Following a review into CBD, the MHRA concluded that it was a medicinal compound that could be used as a treatment for certain health conditions and disorders, including epilepsy. The World Health Organisation (WHO) followed suit in 2017.

But this is not the good news it initially appears to be. As a result of the MHRA’s findings, 18 UK businesses were contacted and ordered to cease trading CBD products within 28 days. The CBD industry was rightly concerned, but the MHRA has since given an update, stressing that their statement is only an “opinion”. However, they are a government body, so businesses must comply with their rules. Now, companies are no longer permitted to sell medicinal CBD or make any medical claims, but they can sell CBD oil as a dietary supplement.

The MHRA’s statement inevitably made it more difficult for CBD users to get hold of products. But in 2018, a widely-publicised specific incident prompted the government body to rethink their stance on the use of CBD.

A young boy who suffered from severe seizures multiple times a day had been showing improvement thanks to CBD oil. His mother had been to Canada to purchase cannabis oil for him but it was confiscated at Heathrow Airport. Following media coverage, the public was in uproar; how could the government prevent this child from having vital treatment?

A review was once again conducted, commissioned by the Home Secretary, Sajid Javid. The findings led to the announcement that specialist doctors could now legally prescribe cannabis-based medicines. The victory was not absolute, however. The medicines must still be vetted by the MHRA and as yet, only a few have been licensed for use in the UK. It’s also hard to have a doctor prescribe these medicines and since the UK doesn’t even stock them, patients must have them shipped from overseas.

What can CBD oil be used for? The licenses and regulations mentioned above apply only to CBD products that are advertised for medical use. CBD oil sold as dietary supplements are exempt, so long as there are no medical claims attached to them. The products must also be sourced from industrial hemp and contain no more than the UK legal limit of 0.2% THC.

As noted in our previous article, How to Buy CBD Oil Online: UK Guide, when buying CBD oil, you should always research the company and its products and check they have certificates of analysis for their CBD products, showing cannabinoid potency and product purity. If you are planning on using CBD oil to help ease a particular condition, we encourage you to research the many benefits of CBD.

Once you know what to look for when buying CBD oil, be aware that it’s up to you to determine if it’s the right product for your needs. Remember that while some users experience various therapeutic benefits, CBD oil sold as a supplement cannot claim to treat or cure any condition.

At Cannaba Tree, you can trust that the products we sell are marketed as dietary supplements – we comply with UK law and cannot make any medical claims about the CBD oil we sell. We’ve also researched the products we choose to sell; they are amongst the best products on the market, products we use, love and know to be safe, and effective. Furthermore, we only stock CBD oil made by reputable companies that have consumer health, safety, and wellbeing at the heart of what they do.
